New Beginnings

Digital camera with zoom lens extended Welcome to my new world in photography with the acquisition of a Panasonic Lumix FZ2500.  After being a Canon fan for almost 25 years, I almost feel like a traitor switching.  But we’d had a Minolta before the Canon, leaving them when they didn’t seem to be keeping up with the times.

As much as we tried to find a modern Canon replacement for our last model that recently gave up the ghost, we discovered the Lumix simply offered so much more that interested us.  So once again, we have switched our loyalties.  It feels so sad!

But, onward and forward!  It is with much appreciation to the family members who gifted us this wonderful new toy for our 50th wedding anniversary this summer, and now we are facing a major learning curve.  There have been many advances in the digital camera world since our last model from over 12 years ago, plus this one is more high-end.  One of the purposes of this blog will be to document our journey around that curve.  I am the primary photographer in the family, more adept in composition, while the engineer in the house tries his best to drill the necessary technical info into my head (hasn’t worked for 25 years, but we can still keep trying!).

When I first got serious about photography with that first Canon, not just snapping family photos (the family was leaving us behind), I got a few books on various aspects of taking pictures.  But I never really learned much new in the transition to digital.  So along with the new ownership of a very technical camera, I have two new books I will be using as aids.

The first one is a manual all about this particular camera, Photographer’s Guide to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ2500/FZ2000, by Alexander S. White.  Hopefully, with 246 pages, I’ll be able to actually understand what I’m trying to accomplish rather than the hit or miss I’m currently managing.

The second book will hopefully be a continuation of my artistic learning, especially in the digital world.  How to Create Stunning Digital Photography, by Tony Northrup, was highly recommended online, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the little bit I’ve managed to read so far.

So now, I invite you to come along with me on my new adventure and (hopefully) watch my progress.  I will also be sharing the tips I pick up and practice, so perhaps you’ll also be learning along with me!
